Known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota offers visitors a wealth of lakeside adventures as well as engaging indoor activities.
Here are some Sears Imported Autos ways to spend a weekend enjoying the wonders of Minnesota:
Brainerd Lakes Area
Located about a two-hour drive north of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Brainerd Lakes area is a spectacular lake recreation region filled with quaint lodges, picturesque lakes, fishing camps, resort towns and fun festivals throughout the year. Among the many activities available are water sports, outdoor sports, miniature golf courses, casino gaming, hot air balloon rides and historic sights. Bicyclers rejoice, the Paul Bunyan Trail in the Brainerd Lakes area is one of the best in America. Stretching 110 miles, the trail ranges from open and flat to scenic and hilly. Hiking and rollerblading is also possible on the trail. For golfers, there are numerous options to play as well.
Mall of America
Are you serious, a weekend getaway at a mall? Yes, this isn’t just any mall. It spans 4.2 square feet and has an indoor amusement park, a 14-screen movie theater, miniature golf course, comedy club, mirror maze and aquarium. The Nickelodeon Universe is a seven-acre attraction, where kids can enjoy rides and meet Nick characters. Anchored by Nordstrom, Sears, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, the Mall of America has hundreds of stores and is available for group tours, birthday parties, reunions and even weddings.
Minnesota Zoo
Located in Apple Valley, a few minutes south of Mall of America, this 500-acre zoo has over 2,900 animals and more than 500 species from around the world. Among the many animals are Mexican wolves, Amur tigers and bottlenose dolphins. In addition, the zoo has a variety of shows and presentations, including a Coral Reef Dive Show, Shark Feedings, Cow Milking Demonstration (seasonal), Bird Encounters in Discovery Bay and a monorail that runs through the Northern Trail and Russia’s Grizzly Coast.
Valleyfair Amusement Park
Billing itself as “the largest amusement park in the upper Midwest,” Valleyfair, located in Shakopee, has more than 75 rides, including eight roller coasters and Soak City Waterpark. Some people love the park as much for the food as the rides and attractions. Among the popular items are Chicago-style hot dogs, pork chop on a stick, deep fried Oreos on a stick, pickle on a stick and funnel cake fries.
Lake Woebegon Trail
Snaking through forests, past lakes and through small towns in central Minnesota, this 62-mile long paved railed trail is open to bicycles, rollerbladers, hikers and snowmobiles without studs in the winter. Extending from the city of St. Joseph to the city of Osakis, the 10-foot wide trail runs on the MN/DOT rail corridor once owned by Burlington Northern Railroad Company. Along the way, trail users have access to parking, restrooms, fresh water, picnic tables and observation towers. One of the highlights is Freeport, where the trailhead is located across the street from Charlies Café and the Pioneer Inn, two locations that served as inspirations for Garrison Keillor’s Chatterbox Café and the Side Track Trap in his Lake Woebegon stories.
