Admittedly, most Minnesotans love winter sports. However, they still celebrate the arrival of spring once the snow melts and temperatures warm.
Here are some ways to enjoy “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” in the spring:
Festival of Nations
Billed as “Minnesota’s Largest Ethnic Celebration," the Festival of Nations in late April and early May at the River Center in St. Paul has been a regular event for nearly 80 years. More than 90 ethnic groups participate in this event, attended by over 90,000 people, which features fantastic food, folk dancing, folk art, an international shopping bazaar and cultural exhibits. Hungarians have participated in the festival since its inception, and their food offerings include Hungarian goulash soup, sautéed mushrooms with paprika over dumplings and chocolate cream torte.
Festival of Birds
Celebrated for 14 years in Detroit Lakes in Becker County, this festival features field trips, films, seminars, performances by comedians and workshops such as the Social Network of Birding and Beginning Birding. There are more than 250 species of birds that live in Becker County, which has tall grass prairie, coniferous and northern hardwood ecosystems. Field trip choices include the Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail and Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge/Agassiz Dunes.
Duluth Homegrown Music Festival
This annual celebration of rock ’n’ roll music in early May in Duluth features more than 100 musical acts, artists and filmmakers. The festival is eight days long and performances take place at venues around the cities of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. All of the entertainment is by local working artists.
Edina Art Fair
Staged on the streets of Edina in early June for the past 45 years, the Edina Art Fair features more than 340 artists displaying a wide range of artwork. Activities include cooking demonstrations, fashion shows, live music entertainment and floral arranging seminars. A big attraction is the variety of food choices, including mini donuts, chocolate bananas, gyro sandwiches, walleye fish sandwiches, cheesy fries, bratwurst and Cuban sandwiches. There’s also a Kids Art Zone with face painting and arts and crafts fun.
Spring Jam Festival
Set at the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis in late April, the Spring Jam is a way for students to welcome spring with live music performances, competitions, and special events. In addition to a series of concerts, activities include choreographed dance routines, yard games and laser tag, outdoor films and a Beatles tribute concert. Most of the action takes place at the Coffman Front Plaza, Riverbend Plaza and Northrop Plaza.
