Since going on sale in September 2013, the CLA has proven popular with Mercedes-Benz fans both old and new. With an attractive price point and seductive styling, the CLA has enjoyed strong sales, bringing in a new wave of happy Mercedes-Benz owners in the process.
Its crossover counterpart, the GLA, has proven equally popular, winning consumers over with its sleek styling, performance, and versatile crossover configuration.
But rather than rest on its laurels, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that both the CLA and GLA will undergo some changes for 2016, with the most notable change coming in the form of a power upgrade for both the performance-focused CLA45 AMG® and GLA45 AMG®.
According to reports, both models will be outfitted with the same upgraded engine that made its debut at Goodwood in the Mercedes-AMG® A45.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has been enhanced to produce 26 more horsepower and 18 more pound-feet of torque, bringing the total output to 381 hp and 350 lb-ft. Enthusiasts will be impressed to learn that this is one of the most power-dense engines available, boasting a remarkable 191 horsepower per liter.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t disclosed what specific upgrades have been made to the powerplant, but we’re happy to report the extra power should cut the zero to 62 mph time of both the CLA45 AMG and GLA45 AMG to 4.4 seconds.
Additionally, both models are expected to utilize a revised seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and new locking front differential, which should help improve grip in both acceleration and handling.
