Mercedes-Benz has left the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) racing series in favor of the newer, all-electric racing series Formula E. Starting in 2019, Mercedes-Benz will join at least 10 other manufacturers in the series, which serves as a testing ground for electric drivetrain development.
“Electrification is happening in the road car world," said Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes-Benz motorsports division, "and Formula E offers manufacturers an interesting platform to bring this technology to a new audience—and to do so with a completely new kind of racing, different to any other series. "
But Mercedes-Benz isn't new to the electric-vehicle craze. Its current B-Class is a fully electric vehicle that's powered by a 132-kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery combination that allows it to achieve a range of up to 87 miles per charge. Easy to maneuver, space-efficient, and equipped with all the little luxuries expected of a Mercedes-Benz, the all-electric B250e is a smart choice.
Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is working on an electric concept car that will take the future of electric vehicles to the next level. The Electric Intelligence concept vehicle has two electric motors, increasing its output to 402 horsepower through scalable battery components. It's able to reach 60 miles per hour in less than 5 seconds and achieve a mind-boggling range of over 300 miles on a single charge.
The Mercedes-Benz commitment to electric vehicles is clear, and the automaker will continue to expand upon and improve its current lineup of hybrid and electric models.
