Florida is more than just white sandy beaches and palm trees. We also have plenty of places to enjoy beautiful autumn vistas. Here are a few of Sears Imported Autos's favorites.
Big Bend Scenic Byway. You don't need to travel all 220 miles of the Big Bend Scenic Highway to get an eye-full of autumn beauty. It can be accessed from Apalachicola in the west, Tallahassee Airport in the north, and Newport in the east. The byway traverses the Apalachicola National Forest and Tate's Hell State Forest. There are two main trails, the coastal trail and the forest trail. Although both are nice, those wishing to see autumn colors should stick to the forest trails. Points of interest include historic markers, interpretive displays, parks, museums, forests, forts, depots, lighthouses, historic buildings, and over 200 miles of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and wildflowers.
The Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway. In addition to warm wetlands teeming with life, the Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway is home to over 100 species of wildflowers, numerous cypress bogs, and longleaf pine forests. Activities abound. They include hiking, fishing, swimming, and camping. Points of interest include Ft. Gadsen, the Apalachicola National Forest, the Ochlockonee and Apalachicola Rivers, and numerous lakes.
Green Mountain Scenic Byway. Take a break from Disney World and head west to Lake Apopka and the Green Mountain Scenic Byway. Those who didn't realize there were hills in Florida will be pleasantly surprised as they travel along the highest hills of Lake Wales Ridge. The byway brings travelers up close to species of plants and animals classified as endangered or threatened, bald eagles, rolling hills, historic buildings, and spectacular views. Cyclists and joggers have been enjoying Green Mountain's autumn views for years. Perhaps it's time to join them.
Old Florida Heritage Highway. In addition to lakes, wetlands, prairies, and rural homesteads, the Old Florida Heritage Highway features pastoral and forested sites to dazzle the autumn vista seeker. America's first naturalist, William Bartram, visited the area in 1774 to describe its natural beauty and colorful vistas. Points of interest along the route include the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site and House and the Payne's Prairie State Preserve. The highway is easily accessed from I-75.
Tamiami Trail Scenic Highway. Calling this scenic highway a great location for beautiful autumn vistas would be somewhat misleading. It, like most areas of Florida, is beautiful year round. The Tamiami Trail cuts through Florida's backcountry in the southern part of the state. The trail takes you through the Big Cypress National Preserve, Collier-Seminole State Park, and the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. A short detour will take you to Everglades National Park.
So, what are you waiting for? Get outside and enjoy the scenery!
